Kotor Cable Car: Is It Worth Taking the Ride to Lovćen?
20 euros for a cable car ride?
That’s exactly what I was wondering before I tried the Kotor Cable Car for the first time.
Now that I’ve done it, I can honestly say it’s one of the most impressive experiences I’ve had in Montenegro.
In just a few minutes, you travel from the coastline up into the mountains of Lovćen National Park. As the cable car climbs higher and higher, stunning views of the Bay of Kotor begin to unfold beneath you - views that are almost impossible to capture in a photo.
If you’re wondering whether the Kotor Cable Car is worth it, here’s everything you need to know, along with my personal experience and a few tips before you go.
What Is the Kotor Cable Car?
The Kotor Cable Car connects the Bay of Kotor with the mountains of Lovćen and has quickly become one of Montenegro’s most popular attractions.
The ride itself takes only about 11 minutes, but during that short journey, you climb more than 4,000 feet (1,300 meters) above sea level.
And honestly, that’s what makes it so special.
The cable car is impressive, but the real highlight is the view.
As you make your way up the mountain, the Bay of Kotor gradually opens up below you. On a clear day, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, the surrounding mountains, and large parts of the bay.
Whether you're visiting Montenegro as a couple, with family, or simply looking for one of the best viewpoints in the country, the Kotor Cable Car is an experience that’s hard to forget.

My First Impression
By now, I’ve visited quite a few places in Montenegro.
Durmitor National Park, Sveti Stefan, Perast, Lake Skadar, and countless viewpoints along the coast.
Even so, the Kotor Cable Car still managed to surprise me.
The reason is simple:
In Montenegro, you usually have to drive long, winding mountain roads to reach those jaw-dropping views.
Here, you simply step into the cable car and within minutes, you’re transported into one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the country.
For me, the views during the ride alone are already worth the trip.
How Much Does the Kotor Cable Car Cost?
At the moment, a round-trip ticket costs 20 euros per adult.
Sure, it’s not exactly cheap.
But when you consider how modern the cable car is and the incredible views you get along the way, I think the price is more than fair.
Especially when compared to similar attractions in other European vacation destinations.
My personal take?
I’d happily spend those 20 euros again.
What Can You Expect at the Top?
Many visitors assume that the cable car ride is the main attraction.
But for many people, the real experience begins once you reach the top.
Here’s what you can look forward to:

I’d recommend setting aside at least two to three hours for your visit.
And if you enjoy photography - or simply want to sit back and take in the views - you could easily spend even more time up here.
Dining with a View - Surprisingly Reasonable Prices
One thing that hardly anyone talks about is the restaurant at the top of the mountain.
And honestly, that was one of the biggest surprises for me.
I expected the prices to be much higher.
After all, we've all been to tourist attractions where you're paying premium prices simply because of the location and the view.
That wasn't the case here.
I found the prices to be surprisingly reasonable. Main courses start at under 20 euros, which is more than fair considering the setting and the incredible views over the Bay of Kotor.
Of course, you're paying for the experience as well.
But at no point did I feel like this was one of those places trying to take advantage of tourists.
Quite the opposite.
If you're already taking the cable car to the top, I'd definitely recommend setting aside some time for lunch - or at least a coffee on the terrace.
For me, it's become an essential part of the whole experience.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
My recommendation?
Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Not only are the temperatures more comfortable, but the lighting is also much better for photos.
I've also heard that the views around sunset are absolutely stunning, with the Bay of Kotor glowing in the warm evening light.
If you're visiting during the summer months, I'd personally try to avoid the middle of the day when temperatures can get pretty intense.
Tips for Your Visit
Don't forget your sunglasses.
Have your camera or smartphone ready - you'll want plenty of photos.
It can be noticeably cooler at the top than down by the coast.
Plan to spend at least 2–3 hours there.
Operations may be limited or temporarily suspended during periods of strong wind.
Is the Kotor Cable Car Worth It?
If someone asked me today about the best things to do around Kotor, the Kotor Cable Car would definitely be near the top of my list.
The combination of mountains, sea views, and breathtaking scenery is hard to beat.
Add to that the modern facilities, easy access, and surprisingly good value for money, and it's easy to see why this attraction has become so popular.
For me, the Kotor Cable Car is one of those experiences you should try at least once during a trip to Montenegro.
Final Thoughts
The Kotor Cable Car is much more than just a ride to the top of a mountain.
It connects the stunning coastline of the Bay of Kotor with the rugged landscapes of Lovćen, offering some of the most spectacular views you'll find anywhere in Montenegro.
If you're looking for an excursion that delivers a memorable experience without requiring much planning or effort, this is one attraction that's unlikely to disappoint.
Personally, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
